Environmental remediation and waste management after Fukushima Daiichi Reactor Accident

This is a presentation material for a Atomic Energy Society of Japan summer seminar on nuclear safety, talking about decontamination and waste management in the environment of Fukushima after the nuclear accident. The overview includes the state of radioactive contamination, background and legal framework for ongoing regional decontamination, decontamination policy and roadmap, decontamination technology and the impact, and waste management (temporary storage, interim storage). Difficulties encountered were caused by lack of preparedness of large-scale radioactive contamination in the environment, lack of scientific basis in constructing decontamination strategy, and lack of trust building with stakeholders in decision making. Transmitting and keeping information for the preparedness for future potential accidents is also important.
